Alexandria became a hub for scholars, with its Great Library being a center of learning, though it was tragically destroyed during Julius Caesar’s wars.

Under Cleopatra VII, who was crowned during a power struggle in the Roman Senate in 51 BC, Alexandria enjoyed autonomy. However, after her death, it became a Roman city.

One of Alexandria’s most intriguing sites is the catacombs of Kom es-Shukafa, discovered by accident in 1900. Remarkably preserved, these catacombs blend Egyptian, Greek, and Roman traditions and are spread over three levels, though the third level is flooded and inaccessible. The first level, accessed through a rope-tied opening, leads to a banquet hall for honoring the deceased, while the second level houses a tomb with three Roman-style sarcophagi and richly decorated burial chambers.
