Cairo: A Hub of Egyptian Art
Cairo is the center of Egyptian art, a city with over a thousand minarets and museums filled with ancient artifacts. It is considered one of the most impressive and unforgettable places in the world. It is the largest city on the African continent, situated on both sides of one of the longest rivers in the world – the Nile. This 20-million-strong metropolis, with its fascinating and diverse architecture, is called the “City of a Thousand Minarets.”
One of the most interesting places in Cairo is the Egyptian Museum, which houses exhibits discovered during archaeological excavations. These include treasures from the tomb of Tutankhamun, mummies of Pharaohs, and artifacts over 5,000 years old.
Every year, millions of tourists visit Cairo and Giza to see the pyramids of Cheops, Chephren, Mykerinos, and one of the eight wonders of the world – the Sphinx. In Cairo’s old district, Fustat, there is a Religious Center with Coptic churches and mosques. One of the oldest churches is the so-called “Hanging Church,” dedicated to the Virgin Mary. It is accessed by 29 steps and is therefore also known as the “Staircase Church.” Another very interesting place is the Coptic Church of Abu Serga – the Holy Family. According to the Bible, this is where the Holy Family hid during their flight to Egypt. The grotto where Mary, Joseph, and Jesus stayed is accessed by winding stairs inside the church chapel. In Fustat, we can also visit the Amr Ibn al-As Mosque, the first mosque built in Africa in 641.

Alternatively, it is also believed that Pharaoh Djedefre, the elder half-brother of Khafre and the second son of Khufu, built the Great Sphinx to honor his father’s memory.
