Cairo: A Vibrant Metropolis
Cairo is a bustling metropolis that harmoniously blends traces of the oldest civilization with the achievements of modern culture. It is the center of Egyptian art, a city with over a thousand minarets and museums full of ancient artifacts.
Cairo is considered one of the most impressive and unforgettable places in the world. It is the largest city on the African continent, situated on both sides of one of the longest rivers in the world – the Nile. This 20-million-strong metropolis, with its fascinating and diverse architecture, is called the “City of a Thousand Minarets.”
Highlights of Cairo:
- The Egyptian Museum:
- Location: Situated in the heart of Cairo, on the famous Tahrir Square.
- Collection: The museum houses artifacts from all periods of ancient Egypt spanning 6,000 years. Over 160,000 masterpieces are exhibited across two floors.
- Treasures of Tutankhamun: This includes the great collection of golden artifacts and jewelry, which lay hidden in the desert sands for over 350 decades until the tomb of the New Kingdom was discovered in 1922.
- The Pyramids and the Sphinx:
- The Pyramids of Giza: Our next destination is one of the Seven Ancient Wonders of the World. We will get close to the mighty pyramids of Cheops, Chephren, and Mykerinos.
- The Great Sphinx: Finally, witness the Great Sphinx in person! This mythical creature, typically depicted as a lion with a human head, dates back to the era of the Old Kingdom of Egypt. There are theories attributing the Sphinx’s likeness to its builder, Khufu. Alternatively, it is also believed that Pharaoh Djedefre, the elder half-brother of Khafre and second son of Khufu, built the Great Sphinx to honor his father’s memory.
